Solving the problems of closet storage

What do you start with when you tidy up the closet?
The storage space is essentially a convenient place where you put things away, so easily putting the things that you use away is an important condition. When you tidy up your closet, it is easier to get your clothes, which as a result, could be a great opportunity for you to become more stylish and refine your beauty.

There are a variety of potential reasons for not tidying up, and I would like to introduce the following solutions for cases where you have not tidied up your closet.

【Reason1】Being unsure about coordinating outfits, and then taking too many out and scattering them about.
【Reason2】Scattering clothes about rather than putting them in the laundry.
【Reason3】Scattering clothes about because they won’t fit in the closet.

For [Reason 1]: Being unsure about coordinating outfits, and then taking too many out and scattering them about.

[Solution] Narrow down coordinating choices
Are there times when you can’t decide in coordinating outfits in the morning, and then you just take off in a hurry and leave the clothes that you were looking at out in a jumble all around the closet?
Clothes are meant to flatter the person who wears them. Consider the appearance that you want to create with the clothes that you wear, and then select the clothes for the image that you want each season.
Coordination often doesn’t go well when you try to force it by selecting things that don’t fit your image or things that you don’t actually want to wear, so narrow down your choices in coordination and eliminate clothes that you don’t really want to wear. First, take all your tops out of the drawers and separate them into piles left and right of tops that you want to wear and tops that you don’t want to wear.

Separate your clothes into piles left and right of those that you want to wear and those that you don’t want to wear. When you put away clothes that you want to wear in a way that is easy to access, coordination becomes easy as well.

For [Reason 2]: Scattering clothes about rather than putting them in the laundry.

[Solution] Create a simple storage system
Don’t you find that folding clothes is a hassle so you end up scattering them about? Create a simple system and place where you can put your clothes when you take them off in order to do away with pesky folding.
For jackets and bottoms (pants and skirts) that don’t need to be washed every time you wear them, for example, set up a temporary place to put them where you get dressed in order to create a situation where you don’t have unsightly clothes scattered about, even if you just toss them down.

In addition, create a line of flow to take in the laundry. Have you considered whether or not the place you put your clothes is close to where you dry them, and to where you change clothes?
Depending on the arrangement of the rooms, it may be good to keep a minimal number of underwear and the like that you wear frequently in the dressing room.

Further, you should develop a simple way to put away the laundry and clothes that you have taken off, as described below.

  • Increase the system of storage using hangers to hang clothes.
  • Stack two or three items on open shelves rather than in drawers.
  • Put partitions in drawers to eliminate the need for complex folding

It is important to sort your items properly before creating a simple system. With socks, for example, sort socks by length and color and decide where to put them before creating partitions.

Set up a basket where you can put clothes temporarily in the area where you change clothes. Baskets that have lids have a cleaner appearance.

For [Reason 3]: Scattering clothes about because they won’t fit in the closet.

[Solution] Create a space so you can easily put away your clothes by disposing of those you don’t wear
The main reason for not tidying up the closet is that clothes are “hard to put away.”
Can you easily take out and put away the clothes on hangers and in the drawers of your closet?
Do you find yourself firmly pushing the clothes on hangers apart to make space for an item you want to hang, or stuffing things into the drawers?
When you can’t put things away unless you cram them in, you can’t put them away smoothly, and tidying up becomes a hassle. You end up leaving more and more clothes out, rather than putting them away.
First, take the clothes that you don’t wear out of the closet that you use daily. Most people who are not very good at storing their clothes hardly ever wear about half of the clothes that they own.
Take out the clothes that you don’t wear, and then donate or dispose of them.

Clothes that you should get rid of

  • Clothes that have not worn in over a year
  • Clothes that you don’t want to wear much
  • Clothes that are the wrong size, but that aren’t worth spending the time and money to have altered
  • Clothes that are the wrong size, but that you might not wear much even if you become able to wear them

If you can’t decide whether or not you should get rid of clothes that you don’t wear, separate your clothes into those that you will keep for regular use and those that you will keep in storage according to the following conditions.
  • You don’t want to wear them right now, but you might wear them if the environment or your feelings changed
  • Clothes that you only wear for special events (resort dresses, outdoor wear, sportswear, party dresses, ceremonial suits, and the like)
  • Keepsake clothes (clothes that you no longer wear but want to keep and cherish because of their sentimental value)

Also, in order to remember why you are putting the clothes in storage, sort them in a way that is clear to see. It is easier to figure out where you are sorting things when you label the hanging clothes and drawers.

When you store the clothes that you aren’t sure whether you should keep or get rid of in a place other than the closet where you keep the clothes that you use daily, you free up space in the closet, which in turn makes it easier to keep daily clothes there.
The closet is the place to keep your important clothes. The ventilation gets blocked if you cram in too many items, which in turn damages your clothes.
Aim to leave room in the closet that you use daily and only keep your favorite clothes that you wear frequently in there. You will then be able to coordinate comfortably in the morning.

If there is no place to keep clothes that you are not sure whether you should keep or get rid of (especially keepsake clothes and ceremonial clothes), or when the storage area is humid and you are worried about mold, we recommend that you use a trunk room storage space that is equipped with air conditioning.
Trunk rooms are convenient because you can select from a wide variety of sizes, according to the amount of clothes that you want to store, including a small space roughly a quarter the size of your closet, a four-jo storeroom (about the size of four tatami straw mats—one mat is about six feet by three feet), and more.

The secret to success in closet storage is to accurately sort out the clothes that you wear from the clothes that you don’t wear. First, sort out the clothes that you will wear this season, and that will flatter you.

If you choose a trunk room fully equipped with air condition to use as a spare closet, the storage conditions are better than those in your home. You don’t need any desiccants or drying agents in these rooms.
